Just ask!

It’s so easy to become consumed with an issue at work.  You can play scenarios in your head, catastrophise and wind yourself up about it.  I’ve done it myself so many times! Have you?

“They are not performing”
“They are lazy”
“They don’t care about the business”
“They are playing the system”

……Maybe they’re not.

Maybe they don’t know what you expect of them, they are out of the depth, they are intimidated, you have not told them the information that you expect them to know about the business or they are not well.

The best thing to do is to communicate with the employee that you have an issue with and find out what their perspective is.  Find out the truth. You may be winding yourself up unnecessarily.  That conversation might improve the situation for you and the employee.
