Penny Strutton – The Career Revolution.
When we’re children, we’re asked “what do you want to be when you grow up”, the answer children give is too often the same as I get from people in their 30’s/40’s/50’s – “I don’t know”. In our teens, we’re encouraged to enter into training, jobs and careers without truly understanding A. who we are as individuals and B. how we fit with different jobs and industries. This leads many people – me included – into jobs that were a poor fit for our strengths, personality, values and more. As time goes by people lose touch with their early passions, their career dreams and make do with the career they’re in – often leading to stress, depression, disillusionment and more.
And I can empathise.
20 years ago I found myself disillusioned. I went to university with the goal of becoming a producer, working on documentaries that took me around the world. When I found myself in Soho London, working for a small production company, I realised that after all my studies, time and money, my values didn’t suit the industry. I left and without a support system (my family were in South Africa) I started temping – and found myself at The Carbon Trust.
I felt like I was giving back, slogging away for a bigger something. I was making a difference. I realised this was important to me and went on to manage a regional charity from Nottingham. Seven years later the charity was closed and the entire workforce made redundant. I was 33 with an 18 month old and 4 year old child. I wanted to be able to be there for them but also wanted a career.
So I went it alone.
Building on my degree in organisational psychology and real life experience, I completed a coaching diploma and started a company that same year. Finally I felt that I could give something back whilst using my unique combination of skills, strengths, values and personality. For the last 10 years I’ve grown my business through coaching and training 100’s of people on their careers, their leadership skills and a lot more – and I’ve loved every minute of it (well probably 95% of those minutes 😊. Work has felt like a natural extension of “me” where I honestly believe I’m living and working my purpose.
I believe more people can live their purpose with the right support. And that is why 10 years on, I have started a revolution that aims to help 10,000 people transform their career and live the lifestyle they deserve. I’m providing a HUGE amount of knowledge and experience for free but also providing organisations with the opportunity to upskill their managers to enable meaningful career growth for their people – boosting performance, engagement and retention!
In the 10 years I’ve run my business I’ve qualified as a business psychologist an NLP practitioner and Lumina psychometric practitioner. These qualifications, coupled with my experience of delivering organisation wide change, leadership development programmes, management training programmes and 1-1 coaching to professionals from across multiple industries, puts me front and centre to help people and organisations really progress in a meaningful way.
